Personal Information

Early Years

First voyage:

In May of 1497 (47) Cabot left England with his own ship named "Matthew" which is fast and weighs 50 tons with a crew of 18 men. Cabot and his crew travelled west and north in John's belief that the route to Asia would be shorter from Northern Europe than Colombus's voyage along the trade winds. In June 24,1497 50 days in the voyage, Cabot landed on the East cost of North America but there is no exact location of his landing. Some believe that he landed at Cape Breton Island or Mainland Nova Scotia or Newfoundland Labrador or even Maine. As the ship sailed on the ocean, the ocean is now more shallow as fishes swims around, they gathered a basket full of fresh Atlantic cods and had a feast. Cabot found a wonderful fishing area now known as the Grand banks that stretches for 500 km and 40-200 metres deep. Cabot wanted to return to England to tell about his trip. The ship sailed to Engalnd in July 1497 and arrived in Bristol, England on August 6,1497. John is rewarded with 10 euroes which is not much. He would be given more if he returned with spices and gold. The merchants were pleased to hear about the cod fishes and infact, they needed more food to sell. The king gave permission for John to make a new voyage in North America in Febuary 1498. They did not meet any Native peoples.

Second voyage:

In May 1498, Cabot wanted to travel south of his First voyage to prove that he had reached Asia and that China is near. The king gave permission and 5 ships lefts Bristol. John Cabot died in his second voyage but no one knows the truth. It is believd that 1 or 2 ships returned to Bristol but whatever happened to the remaining 3 ships is a mystery. They may have sunk in a storm or some other disaster.

Giulio Caboto was John Cabot's father who was a spice merchant who traded spices around some places. His mom's name is Patricia and also had a brother named Piero. In 1474 (age 24), he married a girl named Mattea and became a father of 3 sons--Ludovico, Sancto, and Sebastiano. After a few years, Sebastiano followed his dad's footsteps of becoming an explorer. Cabot has a ship named Matthew. He is a Roman Catholic meaning that he believes in Roman Gods.

At age 11 John Cabot learned how to sail and navigate from italian seamen and merchants . He become a Venetian citizen in 1476 (26) and started to organizing trades in the Eastern Mediterranean sea. He believed that the world was not flat and he could reach Asia by sailing west. Cabot tried to find India, but unfortunately, he found North America. Cabot thought that he reached Asia but the truth is, he found Canada claiming "asia" for England. In 1488 (38) people believed that he got into a financial trouble and left Venice as a debtor in November. He moved to England with his family by 1495 (45). He went to England because he wanted King Henry VII to give him permission to explore. Cabot travelled to England when he heard opportunities and met the king who gave him a grant to "seek out, discover, and find" new lands for England. Cabot was inspired by discoveries of Bartolomeu Dias and Christopher Colombus. He believed that sailing west from Europe was the shortest route to Asia. Cabot was taught how to read and write in a Catholic church. Italian and Latin were the only languages of the church , government and law. He didnt learn English in school because in the 15th century, english was not a very important language in England. John must have learned english in England or some english sailors. Some people think that John Cabot could also speak Spanish because he lived there for some time.

John Cabot is important because without him discovering the Grand banks, seamens wouldn't have food to sell and him discovering and telling everyone about the Grand banks made a huge result where many are fishing and the place became famous. We hope that you learned a lot of things about John Cabot and will talk about him more in the future. Thank you for taking your time to listen to this presentation!
