Biological Perspective

Also called biopsychology or physiological psychology and is related to neuroscience

Deals with microscopic physical and

genetic components that contribute to

certain behaviors

Uses DNA as well as scientific instruments such as

MRI and PET scans to see how drugs, disease, and brain

damage affect thought processes and behaviors

Background

Darwin

"Origin of Species"

Stated that behaviors or phsyical traits

that benefitted the organism would be

selected upon. Started the belief that

behaviors can be biological.

Sheldon

Body type dictates

personality

Although he was for the most

part wrong, his assumption that

certian body types made certain

personalities was an important

step for biological psychology

Sperry

Proved localization

Severed corpus collosum in monkeys and found that their performance in tasks differed with changing visual fields

Proved that different parts of

the brain control different mental

abilities, thus proving localization

Nature vs

Nurture

Twin Studies

Shown that separated twins have

similiar "nurtured" characteristcs,

showing the genetic role in

many psychological aspects of

humans

Memory

EEG scans have shown

that different parts of the

brain deal with different

types of memory

Short Term at the

parietal and frontal

lobes

Long term at the

hippocampus

Emotions and

the Brain

PET scans can show which

parts of the brain are associated

with certain emotions and how

these can be affected by brain

damage

Criticisms

Questioning the generalization

of findings of biological psychology

because all humans don't think the

same

Do all humans have the same

brain structure for thinking?

Relation to

News Story

On the day of the supposed day

of rapture, people who were devoutly

religious were reported to change their

behavior toward that day. It is also thought

that highly religious people have different

neurological pathways in their brain

than non religous people

Involves psychological issues of

changing behavior, emotions,

and faith

Variables were their reported

changes of lack of changes in

their daily behavior

Survey of Feelings

on a "positive" religious

holiday

Two groups of religous

christians and non-religious

people

Survey them based on

thier feelings of happiness,

how they feel toward the day,

and how they look toward

the future

Variables are whether of not

the people are religous or not

Also the answers to their feelings

on a numerical scale of 1 to 10

Expect to find that religious

people will show a better

attitude toward their day and

the future than non-religious

people

Ethical issues are that some of

the people may have strong

emotional reactions to questions.

Also they may feel an invasion of

privacy
