General Valeriano Weyler was born in Palma de Mallorca Spain,

in 1838. He graduated from Infantry School in Toledo with an

Army career. When he was 20 he become a lieutenant.

General Valeriano Weyler served in Cuba. In 1878 he was made a general. In 1895 he was given the Grand Cross of Maria Cristina for his command of troops in the Philippines.

General Valeriano Weyler Reconcentration policy was supposted to protected Cuban civilians alives until the Spanish won. But because of the lack of food, sanitary condition and medicines, over 300,000 people died.

The Grand Cross of Maria Cristina is a

decoration consisting of a cross that indicates

the highest rank.

In 1896 the rebellion was in full swing in Cuba. General Weyler was named governor of Cuba.

During the Spanish American War General Valeriano Weyler was called Butcher Weyler because of the hundreds of thousands of people died in his concentration camps.
