How Did the Purpose of the Church Change Over Time?

The church changed because New France became a royal colony. It was an important role in the development of the colony and held a position in the government of the royal colony.

The Jesuit priests had to take care of poverty, Chasity, obedience and teaching older kids.

The Initial Purpose of the Church

School Education Roles

Introduction

Hello everyone, today we are going to be talking about the Roman Catholic Church in New France. We hope you enjoy!

The church was the only way to get an eduction back then. The priests and the nuns taught the children the roman catholic religion, how to read and write in Latin, French and they teach math as well. Boys did not get much of an education because Quebec Bishop lavas trained these boys who needed to work on the farms. Girls on the other hand received a better education than their own brothers.

The purpose of the church was to:

  • provide religious services to the colony
  • to convert the native to Christianity
  • to take care of the educational needs of children
  • to take care of the illness
  • to help the people who are in need of money
  • was important to all Catholic people

The nuns are helping with children's education, with their health, their social work and for those who are in need.
