Before you begin...

  • Get your UGA ID Card (these can be purchased at the Tate Student Center Cashier’s Window on the third floor for $30
  • Obtain a UGA E-mail Account. Your MyID will be assigned to you and emailed to the email address used on your application to the University.

Credit Requirements

Registration Problems...

  • In order to maintain your VISA status, you must be considered a full time student.
  • To do this, all undergraduates are required to take at least 12 credit hours.
  • And all graduate students are required to take at least 9 credit hours.
  • However, students with assistantships are required by the Graduate School to take at least 12 credit hours.
  • IMPORTANT: Always check with your Immigration Advisor before changing anything with your course schedule! Email immigration@uga.edu or call 706-542-2900.
  • If you find that you cannot register...you have encountered a registration BLOCK
  • Advisement Block: You have not been advised and you need to meet with your adviser to be cleared for registration.
  • Flags: Barriers to your registration. Usually there are 4 types of flags international students acquire.

  • All F and J international students are required by immigration laws to have a current local address and permanent foreign address on record with their University and current in SEVIS at all times
  • Before you register, update your local address in Athena
  • Immunization Flag: Indicates that you probably have not turned in your complete set of health records to the Health Center. ACTION: Call Health Center at (706)-542-1162
  • Degree Proof: (for graduate students) Indicates that you need to show proof of a degree from your previous school. ACTION: Call the Graduate School at (706)-542-1739 or visit their website here

  • Official Complete Transcript: (for graduate students) Indicated that you have not submitted an official transcript. ACTION: Contact the UGA Graduate school by calling (706)-542-1739 or visit their website here
  • VLP “Verification of Lawful Presence”: a check-and-balance system that the state of Georgia uses to make sure that all students at Georgia state schools are legally in the U.S. All international students should have that flag cleared from their record within 24 hours of them checking in with the OIE staff.

  • It is a good idea to have alternative schedules in case the courses you want are full or conflict with each other.
