What is Polydactyly?

  • A small raised bump or skin that looks like an extra finger or toe that isn't formed all the way.

Polydactyly is a disease in which a person has either more than five fingers per hand or five toes per foot.

Surgery is usually required to remove the extra finger or toe in a way to the level of the split, (bone or joint). Surgery is required as early has 6 months of age. Secondary surgery is required if polydactyly is developed at an older age.

What Chromosome is Polydactyly associated with?

Polydactyly is passed on by one parent if they have the disorder. Caused by a dominant allele of a gene.

  • Treating the extra digit can be through a few methods
  • Surgery is the most common method if the extra digit is attached by bones

A locus of this disease has been located on the 13th chromosome.

There is no prevention of polydactyly due to the fact that it is genetic.
