According to Aristotle, a happy life is a good life, which means that being happy is good. Things that make up our life such as people, virtues, intelligence, health, etc are good as well. Aristotle mainly states that happiness is the ultimate good, and happiness is the main thing that is desired in man kind. One can tell if they obtained happiness by looking back on life.
All of these examples can be used in the sense that one does not how good the movie, or game was until it is truly over. One can say "it is going good" or "i think it will be good," but the final, honest answer can only come once it is finished. This goes hand-in-hand with Aristotle's views on a young child, and old man in regards to happiness.
Aristotle says that children cannot be happy because young people have not completed life, thus happiness cannot be determined.
An old man on the other hand can say that he has lived a happy life because he can look back and see what has consumed him.
Happiness= the quality of a whole human life
What makes it good as a whole, total
Objects that people want in order to be happy include:
money, a big house, a nice car, expensive wardrobe, high-end jewelery etc...
A human life involves pleasure, and joys, but can also involve many pains, and trouble. Ultimately either way one can still have a good, and content life.
According to Aristotle, none of this can really provide happiness because they are simply objects with no personal value
is the ..."supreme good for man" which according to Aristotle is happiness.
He says that people often misunderstand happiness, because they only think about what happiness is for them personally.
For example, hanging out with friends, having a lot of money, going shopping, having a drink is how certain people perceive happiness. But to Aristotle, that is not what it is about.
- "that which is always desirable in itself and never for the sake of something else" (Nicomachean Ethics, 1097a30-34),
Happiness is a final end or goal that sums up one's life. It is not something that is instant, in the sense of pleasure, it is more like the final worth of ones life as they lived it to their final moment. In other words, did they live their life as a decent human being? In a sense, one wouldn't be able to state if they were happy until the end of their lives
- Meaning that the final result or goal of happiness must be attained by man themselves, because its something they want, and they are doing it for themselves.
- Our supreme good, or happiness is to live in a manner in which reason comes before pleasure
- Our happiness must come from goodness in which is long-lasting
In other words, what are people looking for in life? What goal are they attempting to reach, and why ? What is the purpose of each persons life, and the reason they are living in the first place?
The key to happiness is by doing virtuous actions, as well as doing well in life.
Virtuous actions in a whole = protecting life and avoiding harm, being generous, following rules, being honest and truthful, be helpful, etc...
Being virtuous, and doing well in life will lead to happiness which is the ultimate good.
I agree with Aristotle's intake on happiness, but I also see it in a different way. Personally I think happiness is the ultimate good but happiness is different in each and every person. Everyone is created differently, meaning goals, morals, and values are different depending on that person. Happiness in my opinion can be found during ones life because the people live their lives in a way to be happy. So in conclusion I don't think that the only way to see if you were truly happy is at the end of the life, but if you are living life to the fullest based on waht you want as a person.
