Impacts

Christians believe that Monomutapa held the mines for King Solomon's legendary mines.

The Mutapa Empire was founded around the year 1420 by a Great Zimbabwean man named Nyatsimba Mutota in his search of a new source of salt. He settled in a fertile valley near the city of Sofala and then controlled the conquered Shona people to mine for gold in the nearby rivers and streams.

Mutapan Religion

The Mwenes believed in Mwari, which was their only God. They believed Mwari created all natural things. During ceremonies they wore a special "yaka mask".

The Span of the Mutapa Empire

The Mutapa and Surrounding Kingdoms

The Mutapa Empire was fairly small compared to many of history's famous empires like the British or the Mongolian empires. The kingdom was located in the southeastern part of Africa in present day countries such as Zimbabwe, and stretched to Mozambique, Lesotho, South Africa, and Swaziland.

Origins

Trade

  • Around the year of 1425, the king of Shona, Mutota, set out on a journey in the region between the Zambezi River and the Limpopo River, and on to the coast of Mozambique.
  • Journey was finished by Matope, his son.
  • 1480- Matope died; causing power struggles.

The Mutapa Empire also stimulated the trade in gold, salt, copper, silver, and ivory.
