Jay-Z was born on December 4, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York. Jay-Z's birth name was Shawn Carter. Shawn had two sisters named Michelle and Andrea, as well as a brother named Eric. Shawn was the youngest of the family.
Shawn grew up in Marcy houses,
a housing project in the Bedford-Stuvestant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

high school untill it was closed down.
He then attended George Westinghouse
Career and Technical education high school. Shawn later went to Trenton high school in Trenton, New Jersey, where he dropped out.
Shawn was inspired to play music
when his mom bought him a boom box for his birthday one year, sparking his interest in music. He began freestyling and writing lyrics.

Shawn was nicknamed "Jazzy"
in his neiborhood. He can briefly be heard in some of Jaz-O's early recordings in the 1980's and 90's.

by famous record houses, so he chose to found his own independant label. He released his first album in 1996, called "Reasonable Doubt".

releasing album, "Reasonable Doubt". The album only reached #23 on the Billboard charts, but it's widely recognized as an indisputable hip-hop masterwork.
