Giraffe Vertebrae

Giraffe's vertebrae vs. kid's head

Human Vertebrae

Of course, each of a giraffe's vertebrae can be as long 10 inches (about the size of my head and neck).

Of course, their vertebrae aren't connected to each other the way ours are, which is why they are more flexible.

Like us they also have shoulder and hip joints, ribs, feet, heel bones, and wristbones. Unlike humans, they have four legs and no arms. A giraffes heel is also different. It is not directly on their feet, it is higher up the leg.

Unique to the giraffe, their front legs are slightly longer than their hindlegs. Making them stand tall and allowing them to reach leaves even higher up in a tree.

The Tallest Land Mammal

Although, humans and giraffe’s both have skulls. They are different shapes due to how and what we eat. Giraffe’s are herbivores. Their teeth are adapted to eat leaves. Giraffes also have horns placed on top of their skull.

Giraffes are the tallest land mammals in the world, but about half of their height comes from their necks!

Think longer must mean more vertebrae?

No. Actually, they only have seven vertebrae, the same number of backbones that humans and many other mammals have.

7 human vertebrae = 7 giraffe vertebrae
