A putt putt boat is toy with a very simple steam engine without moving parts. These boats are typically powered by a candle or a vegetable oil burner.
Other names for the putt putt boats are pop pop boats, crazy boats, flash steamers, hot air boats and pulsating water engine boat. These names are given to the boats because of the sound it makes or "gives off" when powered up.
The first putt putt boat was made by a Frenchman named Thomas Piot. In 1891, Thomas filed a patent application in the UK for a simple putt putt boat using a small boiler and two exhaust tubes.
In 1915, an american named Charles J. McHugh filed a patent application for a diaphragm type of engine that was an improvement from Thomas' design. This type of engine was common over the years with homemade putt putt boats, due to its simplicity of construction.
