Fashion for Women

Baroque Art:

Art in France:

Fashion for Men:

The same goes for the woman at this time period. Poor woman had to wear many layers due to the climate and usually wore dull colors. As for the wealthier women wore thick elegant gowns of the same cool colors as the men—but softer because woman needed to be portrayed as more delicate than men. Also, women of this time period wore more conservative clothing, also because they should be portrayed as the walking idea of innocence.

In the 1700’s men who were devastatingly poor wore many layers of “rags” for cloths while the merchant class, Nobles, and the King wore very feministic clothing: heels, tights, and makeup. Simply because they had money, they had a need to portray their wealth in the cloths they wore. Men with money wore mostly blues, purples, and other cool colors—usually in silk—for these were the rarest and most expensive clothing to wear at this time.

Baroque art is characterized by lots of drama, deep, rich color, and harsh light and dark shadows.

Baroque art is usually painted scenes which are happening at the climax, or most intense part of a moment. Renaissance art on the other hand, usually depicted a scene right before a moment

An example of this is the Renaissance artist Michelangelo, where he sculpted the Bible character David composed and still before his battle with Goliath; The 17th century artist Bernini sculpted David in the act of hurling the stone at the giant.

Baroque art was intended to release emotion and passion, instead of the calm rationality that had been a popular art style during the Renaissance

Rococo Art:

Rococo art is completely different from Baroque Art. It does not have the emotional and dramatic feel. This style depicts noble subjects (portraits). These paintings are charming and have decorations such as flowers or seashells.

Society and Gender roles:

Presentation by Erin Costanza and Ellie Slick

French society had strong catholic roots. A lot of the Baroque paintings had dramatic scenes from the bible. Also, women were considered the “lesser” of the two genders. This is why in most of the French art women were being rescued by men, or were depicted as “helpless.”
