Still Images and The Power of Visual Conventions

The Long shot is used to show a person or object in their environment. The Long shot shows the background in the image.

In this image a group of samurai are seen traveling through the Country side of Japan.

What are Visual Conventions and Still Images???

The Mid shot is used to show a persons face and part of their body. The Mid shot is commonly used in a still image where a conversation is happening.

In this image the man's facial expression is seen and so are the tattoos on his arms. Little background is shown.

Still images are visual texts that are constructed to represent people and issues to the viewer in a particular way.

Still images are constructed through visual conventions. These conventions are either technical, written or symbolic codes.

The Close up Camera shot focuses on a specific subject or object. The shot shows no Background.

In this image the closeup camera shot focuses on the weight lifters powdered hands gripping the bar.
