Infinite Resource

Is there an alternative resource that is environmental and economical friendly?

What is this new energy source?

Peter Bruce, a chemistry professor at University of St. Andrews (Scotland) discovered a new energy source to replace the particles in lithium batteries with a new energy named the STAIR CELL, which is ten times stronger than the current lithium batteries and much cheaper to produce.

Bruce was also funded by the Engineering and Physical Research Council in the UK.

So how does this exactly work?

It produces electric power from using oxygen from the air; thus, making it infinite, since air is a nondepletable source.

Before Bruce's discovery, Robert Kostecki, a deputy director for Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, said that over the past 210 years of battery inventions there has not been as much progress in advancement.

This type of battery is still being used today in gasoline-powered cars.

So what type of battery do people have to rely on now?

{a} Lithium-Ion Battery

Why the Lithium-Ion Battery?

  • Higher Power Storage than normal rechargable batteries
  • High Current
  • Flexibility in Weight and Size
  • Cheap to Produce

So what does the STAIR Cell have to do with this battery?

Lithium batteries are made from lithium cobalt oxide (LiCO2) and the purpose of the STAIR Cell is to replace that particle.

So how does it make the battery ten times stronger?

The cell is a porous carbon, which reacts to oxygen that is constantly drawn outside the battery; thus, creating infinite energy for the battery.

Now that we have the new energy source, why is it so unpopular?

{b} The dispute between Electric vs. Gasoline powered cars

The first electric car was invented by Robert Anderson during 1840's in Scotland and it continued to spur throughout Europe, only until the US introduced gasoline-powered cars.

Oil was cheaper than electricity, which was the reason why electric vehicles grew unpopular.

Ironically, now that oil prices are rising people are beginning to shift toward to electrical cars. (Smart Cars, Hybrids, Prius, etc.)

Hybrid Cars - powered by gas and electricity

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV's) - soley powered by electricity

Which of the following is more energy efficient?

Gas or Electricity?

  • Gasoline converts 20% of energy (from using the internal combustion engine known as ICE)
  • Creates pollution (burning fuel)
  • Electricity converts 75% of energy (from batteries) to power the car
  • Creates no pollution

What about in terms of disadvantages for the driver/owner?

Electricity:

  • All-Electric Cars (BEV's) can only drive up to 100 miles before recharging
  • Hybrids can travel up to 200 miles
  • Can only travel SHORT distances compared to gas
  • Constantly recharging car on long road trips
  • Expensive Battery Costs (needs to be changed often)

Gas:

  • Travels 300 miles in a single gas tank (pollution)
  • Can travel LONG distances (visiting the gas station often)
  • Oil prices are increasing drastically

{a} However, with the new discovery of the STAIR Cell, all of the disadvantages for electricity can easily be negated.

The Stair Cell allows:

  • 300 miles of travelling before recharging
  • Cheap to purchase
  • Recharges through AIR

{c} Are there any countries that are promoting renewable energy sources similar to the STAIR Cell?

Professor Sukhatme, who teaches at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, foresees the troubling future of India due to population size and especially energy sources to provide the future population.

Sukhatme's Predictions:

  • India's population will grow 483 million in the next 60 years
  • Consume 3400TWh/yr (Terawatts-hour per year)
  • Renewable energy as a whole would only potentially produce 1299TWh/yr
  • In the future, India will have huge setbacks due to energy usage

The renewable resources that India currently have will only meet 36% of the power needed in the year 2070.

India would have to build power management systems and remove electrical grids within each houses in order to power the home.

India is not the only country that will face this problem but the whole world will too.

However, with the discovery of the STAIR Cell it may seem very possible for India to prevent the energy crisis in the future.

With the future situation of India at hand, the implementation of the STAIR Cell is a strong step for engineers to make a better future for all of us.
