SYNTHESIS:

  • The Lord has made it clear that He will not be fooled by appearances, and He has warned us not to be false to Him or to others. He has cautioned us to be wary of those who project a false front, who put on a bright pretense that hides a darker reality.

"For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."

  • 1 Samuel 16:7

Appearance vs. Reality

  • We learn from scriptures and church

leaders, as well as Plato, that reality

is not based solely on appearance.

Presented by: Carol Hansen

"Do we indeed, actually live the gospel, or do we just manifest the appearance of righteousness so that those around us assume we are faithful when, in reality, our hearts and unseen actions are not true to the Lord's teachings?"

  • Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin

APPEARANCE

DOES NOT

DICTATE

REALITY

Are "Appearance and Reality" one and the same, or are they quite different things?

PATHOS

Emotions/Sympathy

"If he was forced to look at the light itself, wouldn't it hurt his eyes? Wouldn't he turn away and run back to the things he could see?"

Appearances DO make reality!

  • We are led emotionally and logically to agree with Plato's premise that reality is not determined only by what we are able to see.
  • By using the "Socratic Method" of questions and answers, we are naturally led to agree with Plato's assumptions.
  • Glaucon's constant answers of "Of Course" and "Naturally" lead us to also agree with Plato.
  • The "Forms" are reality, while the shadows are reflections of that reality.
  • Plato helps us to understand that reality, rather than appearance, are the "Forms" and that is the only true object of study that can provide us with genuine knowledge, the highest and most fundamental kind of reality.
  • Appearance is NOT reality.

What we perceive as reality, is in fact,

OUR reality!

REALITY

Truth

"What people in this situation would take for truth would be nothing more than the shadows of the manufactured objects."

  • Example: "Do I Look Religious?"
  • First Appearances/Judgmental?

"When he saw a soul in difficulties, unable to see, he would not laugh mindlessly, but would ask whether it had come from some brighter life and could not cope with the unfamiliar darkness, or whether it had come from greater ignorance into what was brighter, and was now dazed by the glare. One he would congratulate on what it had seen, and on its way of life. The other he would pity."

Knowledge

Common Sense

  • In a lot of ways...appearance

MUST determine our reality!

Forms From the Perspective of Pathos

"I should think of their own souls' journey."

THESIS:

CONCLUSION:

  • Reality is NOT determined by appearance.

"...in the realm of what can be known the thing seen last, and seen with great difficulty, is the form or character of the good. But when it is seen, the conclusion must be that it turns out to be the cause of all that is right and good for everything."

  • Form is ultimately the pinnacle of reality. Form is reality, and this reality is truth.

"We must pity those who are blind because they are moving back down to darkness, while we rejoice with those who are blind because they are moving into the light."

  • Appearance does NOT determine reality. Reality and "The Forms" exist regardless of Man's ability to see or perceive them.
  • There is a true reality and it is our responsibility to ensure that we are always moving toward the light or the truth.
