There are also British distribution companies that are simply UK based branches of American companies
On the other side of Hollywood blockbusters are Independent films that can take several different companies to fund, produce and distribute.
This forms the majority of the British film industry.
Because of this, this is a very competitive market for movies and it means that those that are distributed by the big companies have to have one of or a few of the following things...
Big action movies that get made by big American Hollywood companies tend to star some popular actors.
Taken stars Liam Neeson
and was distributed by 20th Century Fox
Die Hard starred Bruce Willis who was at the height of his popularity during this period. This was distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Salt starred Angelina Jolie and was actually rewritten so that she could star in it. It was distributed by Columbia Productions
We could avoid synergy at this stage and simply use our own company to distribute our film. We could distribute it to cinemas or simply straight online.
We have an unknown cast and director. Our film isn't a screen adaptation of a book or about a known character. And it isn't a sequel. Therefore our film would not be distributed by one of the big American companies like others from the genre.
Many films are made with a popular cast but with the addition of a director that is well received and so the distribution company can minimise the risk of not getting their money back.
Hanna was directed by Joe Wright, an English Director, who is more commonly known for his period dramas but in this case, with a cast of Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett, an action thriller was distributed by Sony Productions and Focus Films (an Art House company)
13 Hours is a true story based on the soldiers of Benghazi and directed by Micheal Bay, who is notorious for his explosive action movies and rewarding Hollywood with lots of money. This was produced by Paramount Pictures.
The Equalizer was a TV drama in the 1980s and the reboot was sparked by having the Director, Antoine Fuqua and actor Denzel Washington on board.
Heat is seen as
a cult classic starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Val Kilmer, but perhaps as important, directed by Micheal Mann. This was distributed by Warner Bros.
Another increasingly popular feature would be for the screenplay of the movie to be based off of a novel or known character.
They were distributed by Warner Bros. These movies also meet the 3 criteria I have mentioned and adds something else. Although not an ongoing franchise (a definitive trilogy), the first former movies would have created more momentum for the later ones to be accepted as there would be a greater hype.
The Dark Knight trilogy is obviously based on the DC Comics character, Batman. The Dark Knight (the second movie) stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Maggie Gyllenhaal. In addition to this it was directed by Christopher Nolan who is one of the top Directors in the world. Basing these movies on an already fairly well-known character draws in fans and even people that are just curious. This trilogy specifically puts a dark spin on the comic book series and intrigued a higher audience with each successive movie.
This movie was distributed by Paramount Pictures.
This movie covers all 3 of the criteria I have mentioned so far
Jack Reacher is based on Lee Child's bestselling book series, Jack Reacher, currently consisting of 20 books. It stars Tom Cruise in the titular role, accounting for the famous actor, and is directed by Christopher McQuarrie who is well known in Hollywood.
This seems like a more appropriate option than the others as we are in fact amateur filmmakers.
Movies that are sequels or an install in an ongoing series are often distributed by the big companies because they are made due to the big success of the former movie(s) and so are more likely to do well at the box office and may even be easier to distribute.
M:I 3 - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Simon Pegg, Laurence Fishburne. Directed by JJ Abrams
This probably gained much of its success due to carrying the franchise's name. However, a fifth movie starring Damon as Bourne and Directed by Greengrass has been shot and is ready for release later this year (2016) which continues the franchise on fully with Jason Bourne. These movies are distributed by Universal Pictures.
The Bourne trilogy stars Matt Damon; is directed by Doug Liman and then Paul Greengrass; and is based on the character Jason Bourne from Robert Ludlum's bestselling novel series. So up to this point it meets all 3 previously mentioned criteria. The Bourne series used to be a definitive trilogy. But then a fourth containing new actors, crew and characters was made.
Casino Royale is the 21st movie in the James Bond franchise starring Daniel Craig as Bond, Dame Judi Dench as M and Eva Green as Vesper. This series is based off of Sir Ian Fleming's 007 series of books. There are currently 24 to movies and this is still ongoing. It is distributed by MGM and Columbia Pictures.
We distribute it!
As well as this we could maybe even enter our film into an amateur filmmakers film festival. BIAFF; YouTube's Your Film Festival; 21 Film Project; and Rochester International Film Festival are just a few examples of competitions we could enter to get our film out there.
An action thriller is a very popular genre internationally. It draws people of a great age range and from different interests for a simple reason: Most people enjoy a good adrenaline fueled "punch up", possibly with some espionage or mind games thrown in.
M:I 2 - Thandie Newton, Brendan Gleeson and Anthony Hopkins
M:I 5 - Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin
The Mission Impossible franchise was not based off of books, but it does have quite an all-star cast across the series. They all feature Tom Cruise as the protagonist, and Ving Rhames. They are distributed by Paramount Pictures.
M:I4 - Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton
