What is an Exorcism?

-Nearly all exorcists evoke the name of God and Jesus Christ (less commonly, the names of various saints and angels)

-Rituals depend on the exorcist and the person believed to be possessed.

-Some may be successful after one session, others may take countless sessions, some years.

-Some exorcists incorporate a crucifix.

-the expulsion or attempted expulsion of an evil spirit from a person or place

What is an Exorcist?

-An exorcist is a Christian authority figure, frequently a Catholic priest, who has been identified as having unique gifts which enable him to successfully perform exorcisms.

-Can also be Christian ministers

-recieve training through seminary or mentorship programs.

Signs of Demonic Possession

-the words "demon" and "demons" are mentioned more than 70 times in the bible (only two from OT)

-Demons were blamed for the inability to speak (Matthew 9:32) failure to eat or drink (Matthew 11:18) blindness (Mathew 12:22) seizures (Matthew 17:15) living in tombs (Mark 5: 2-5) being "raving mad" (John 10:20)

and predicting the future (Acts 16: 16-18)

-Demons were blamed for things people in the biblical times did not understand.

-solemn exorcism (public, great)

-private exorcism (minor and simple)

-Baptismal exorcism (included in sacrament of baptism)

-Usage of exorcized water, oil, salt and incense.

Catholic Exorcisms

-loss or lack of appetite

-cutting, scratching and biting of skin

-a cold feeling in the room

-unnatural bodily postures and change in person's face and body

-Change in a person's voice

-Supernatural physical strength not subject to the person's build or age

-Intense hatred or violent reaction towards all religious things

-An exorcist in the Catholic church is a diocese priest or bishop possessing a special permit for performing exorcisms.

-The permission is permanently or temporarily granted by the bishop to the priest.

-Guided by the recommendations of the Roman Ritual, obtained knowledge and his own experience.

-obligated to take the greatest care in recognition, to estimate how the possession might have started and that the person is not mentally ill.

-he has given support to the work of exorcists in the Catholic church.

-This law (canon law) gives legal recognition to the performance of exorcism.
