Slave Trade in Ancient Greece

Slavery was a fundamental aspect to the Greek society and way of life. It was believed that slaves were necessary for society to function properly - so that aristocrats could have time to discuss and learn about culture and politics.

I think that Ancient Greek people were snobs. They thought that the work that slaves did was beneath them. They saw no reason to change how they did things, so Ancient Greece lagged behind other cultures development, such as India and China, especially in the areas of society, technology and population.

Where did the slaves come from?

What conditions did they work in?

How did the slave trade contribute to ancient Greek society?

People became enslaved due to being kidnapped and sold into slavery by bidding; this is what happened to Nic – his physical attributes were described, then the bidding began. People were born into slavery because their parents were slaves, or they were acquired as a result of wars.

Slaves had no choice who they worked for or who owned them. They would be beaten or starved if they disobeyed their master. We read about Nic being beaten and starved when one of his goats was killed by a wolf. Slaves needed their owner’s permission to marry or raise children; they could be sold at any time.

The owners knew but didn’t care that slaves working in the Silver mines were being poisoned by the lead present.

Freeing valued slaves was a common practice, also slaves that were too old to work. Some slaves were able to earn money and enjoy some independence.

What did the slaves do?

Conclusion

Slaves among society

The role that male slaves played in ancient Greece was many and varied. They included: cutting hair in barbershops, working in public baths, working as teachers or accountants if they could read and write, musicians or dancers if skilled. They worked in homes, as gardeners and handymen, market shopping, and taking their owners children to school. Farm work included - planting seeds, plowing, harvesting crops of wheat, barley, olives, tending horses or goats.

Slaves working as rowers on trading ships did not fare well, but slaves that were most ill-fated worked in the silver mines.

Both men and women worked in small shops or factories, making shoes, pottery, leather or weaving cloth.

Roles that female slaves had were more limited than the men - wet-nurses, cooks, cleaners and nannies. They would also water from public fountains.

Bibliography

Slaves made up about a third of ancient Greek population.

This civilisation did not prioritise technology to advance manufacturing of goods or food production due to the reliance on slaves and their place in society, despite making important advances in navigating and shipbuilding, a critical part of their economic trades.
