Multiplicative Comparisons and Additive Comparisons

Learning Targets:

I can solve comparison word problems.

I can distinguish multiplicative comparisons from additive comparisons.

Additive Comparisons

Multiplicative Comparisons

Group Me

One quantity is a certain number of times as much or times as many as another quantity.

5 times as many as 4 is 20.

42 is 7 times as many as 6.

Compare a given greater quantity and a given lesser quantity, asking how much more/how many more or how much less or how many fewer.

*Sometimes the unknown quantity can be the difference between two given quantities.

Example:

Evan's dog weighs 63 pounds. Oxana's dog weighs 9 pounds. How much more does Evan's dog weigh than Oxana's dog? 63-9=n, n=54

1. Sarah's dog weighs 6 times as much as Oscar's dog. Together the dogs weigh 63 pounds. How much does Sarah's dog weigh? (Include a model)

2. Sarah's dog weighs 54 pounds. Oscar's dog weighs 9 pounds. How much more does Sarah's dog weigh than Oscar's dog?

Independent Practice

1. Carlita saw 6 times as many blue cars as red cars while waking down the street. She saw 7 red cars. How many cars did she see in total?

2. Valerie and Brett have a total of 24 racing ribbons. Brett has twice as many ribbons as Valerie. How many ribbons does each have?

3. Fred's frog jumped 9 times as far as Al's frog. The two frogs jumped a total of 36 times. How far did Al's frog jump?

Where am I at with my learning?

4: I am an expert and can distinguish multiplicative comparisons from additive comparisons and explain my thinking.
