Conclusion

Rising Action

The narrator finally gets to talk to Mangan's sister. He had always admired her and thought about her all of the time. "I had never spoken to her, except for a few casual words, and yet her name was like a summons to all my foolish blood."

Upset and discouraged he decided not to get Mangan's sister anything. This led him to become very upset with himself. "Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger."

Climax

Mangan's sister asks if the narrator will be attending the Araby coming up. "She asked me was I going to Araby. I forgot whether I answered yes or no. It would be a splendid bazaar; she said she would love to go." She explains that she is not able to go, and asks if he can bring her back something. He promises to go and get something for her. This becomes a big distraction for him.

"Araby" Plot Line

Exposition

The narrator has to wait for his uncle to come home for train fare. When his uncle finally comes home it is past 9 pm. "I heard him talking to himself and heard the hallstand rocking when it had received the weight of his overcoat. I could interpret these signs. When he was midway through his dinner I asked him to give me the money to go to the bazaar. He had forgotten." The boy takes off for the event but doesn't get there until it is about to close. He approaches one of the very few booths that are still open. The woman that ran it was preoccupied and rude.

The story begins as the narrator describes his home on North Richmond street. He lives here with his aunt and uncle. The former tenant of the house, a priest, died there. "North Richmond Street, being blind, was a quiet street except at the hour when the Christian Brothers' School set the boys free. An uninhabited house of two storeys stood at the blind end, detached from its neighbours in a square ground." He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and enjoyed seeing Mangan's (his friend) sister even more.
