Savagery

Jack killed a sow.

In the beggining, Jack had trouble killing the sow.

He was physically capable, but he couldn't bear the thought of ending a helpless life.

However, he later became a savage hunter, losing sight of his original morals.

This not only allowed him to kill the pig, but he also enjoyed doing it.

The mask Jack made turned him into a new person, both barbaric and savage.

His old values were holding him back.

He was raised with certain opinions of what is right versus what is wrong.

The mask he made nullified these opinions and made him capable of doing things he never could have imagined himself doing.

Certain events displaying this are when he killed the sow and created his own barbaric tribe.

The tribe formed by Jack killed Simon.

They were perfoming a ritual dance in the storm when Simon approached them.

Their time on the island had destroyed their logic.

This led them to believe that Simon was the "beast" that they had imagined.

As a result of this thinking, they killed him out of fear.

They had not realized or taken the time to discover that it was only Simon and not the beast.

Based on these events, we have come to the following conclusion regarding William Golding and his view on savagery.

We believe Golding would strongly agree with the statement:

Civilized humans are born into an innately good and kind society.

However, when the world they are used to living in is drastically changed, nature requires them to go back to a more primitive and savage way of life.
