Monster Theory

Ana Melendez, Stefan Harriot, Maya Deleon

The Monstrous Difference

Grendel, from the epic poem Beowulf, is hated not only for his violent behavior but because of his lineage.

Anglo-Saxons and Lineage

  • Anglo Saxons valued your family's history, especially your father's, above all
  • ex: Beowulf always introduces himself as son of Ecgtheow
  • Grendel does not have a father which makes him different from everyone else
  • He is a descendant of Cain, a murderer who was banished to walk the Earth

Gender Roles and Monsters

Grendel's mother oversteps the boundaries of her gender role and in doing so, is labeled a monster.

Thesis 4: The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Indifference
