The genre of my book is realistic fiction.
The book Peak is the main character, Peak Marcello, writing about his adventure of climbing Mt. Everest. After Peak is arrested for climbing and vandalizing a skyscraper in New York, a kid dies trying to do what he did. The only thing keeping Peak out of jail is him moving to live with his dad in Tibet, who he hasn't seen in seven years. His dad is a professional climber and he has a climbing business that's struggling. Peak's dad, Josh, wants Peak to climb Mt. Everest and get his company back on track which dissapoints Peak because he is potentially being used by his own father. Peak is only 14, so if he completes this climb then he will be the youngest person ever to summit Mt. Everest. There is another 14 year old named Sun-Jo who is also trying to summit the mountain at the same time as Peak, which Peak uses as motivation. As Peak climbs through harsh environments, determination is what keeps him climbing.
I think that the theme of my book is to never give up. Peak is facing a huge obstacle at only 14 years of age but he doesn't give up on what he wants to accomplish. While trying to climb Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, he also has to try to become closer with his dad.
My favorite part in this book is when Peak is about to reach the summit of Mt. Everst and be the youngest to ever do so. When he is ten feet from the summit he stops and realizes that he has no good reason to break the record other than to get money for his dad's climbing business so he decides to wait for the other 14 year old, Sun-Jo and let him break the record before him and be the youngest person to summit the mountain. Sun-Jo needs the money for his family to be able to stay in school. This act of kindness from Peak is what probably made it my favorite part because he put someone elses needs before his. I also believe that this part was the climax of the book.
The authors purpose for writing the book Peak was to show that if you really want to do something and you put your mind to it then you can get it done.
I give this book a solid 9/10 because it's a great book and it's cool having the main character your age, however, i feel like some parts could have been more exciting. Also it's really cool how humble Peak was when he decided to let Sun-Jo summit before him.
