Under the trees light

has dropped from the top of the sky,

light

like a green

latticework of branches,

shining

on every leaf,

drifting down like clean

white sand.

A cicada sends

its sawing song

high into the empty air.

The world is

a glass overflowing

with water

Biography of Pablo Neruda

ODE TO ENCHANTED LIGHT IS A POEM PRAISING THE BEAUTY OF LIGHT.

"Under the trees light

has dropped from the top of the sky,

light

like a green

latticework of branches,

shining

on every leaf,

drifting down like clean

white sand. "

This part of the poem describes how light shines downward and into the little gaps between the branches, and each beam of light intertwines with each other. Also, light illuminates the tiny particles in the air that drift down to the ground.

"A cicada sends

its sawing song

high into the empty air.

The world is

a glass overflowing

with water"

This part of the poem is saying that the cicadas' noises are in the air and that means that nature makes all kinds of noisese. The poem then becomes metaphoric. If a glass is half full, it means that they are full of optimism. However, in this case the water is overflowing the glass, showing that beauty is all around.

Pablo Neruda was born in Chile. The Spanish Civil war and the murder of a man he knew named Garcia Lorca, made him join a republican movement. He later started to work on his poems many of which were written when he was going through a hard time. He is Chile's best poet, and in 1971 he won the Nobel Peace prize for literature. He also inspired a movie called II Postino (the Postman).
