The damage caused by the war to these countries left only two countries with the military strength and resources to be called superpowers….

The United States and the Soviet Union had been allies during WWII, but after the war their disagreements grew.

The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would work together to stop the spread of Communism.

The United States signed an agreement with many Western European nations, forming an alliance agreeing that an armed attack against one member nation would be considered an attack against all of the member nations.

This agreement was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or in simpler terms: NATO.

In response, the Soviet Union set up an alliance known as the Warsaw Pact, which was made up of many Eastern European countries.

The Communist countries separated themselves from the rest of Europe through secrecy and censorship.

In a famous speech, Winston Churchill described this invisible separation as an “Iron Curtain” that had descended upon Europe.

"Everything belongs to the state and should be run by the government on behalf of the people.

"All industry, business and agriculture should be owned by private people or firms. Competition between rival factories or shops or farms will cause prices to fall and make firms more efficient. "
