Globalization

The End of European Empires

  • The Korean War helped accelerate globalization because it did start as a civil war with one side against communism and one side who supported it.
  • The Korean war also reinforced the Cold War within Europe

This map shows the division of the nation, making it clear that there is a civil issue amongst the people within.

A photo of American troops landing in South Korea. Truman's administration told European allies to strengthen their military forces during the Korean war, even to rearm West Germany.

Colonial Independence Movements

  • Britain lost control of India, Palestine and Kenya leaving nothing but an assortment of small island territories.
  • The French too met the same fate, their empire dismantled after the Franco-Algerian War.

Brinkmanship

  • Eisenhower taking over brought on a more intense and aggressive approach which lead to the Soviets returning that attitude.
  • The construction of the Berlin Wall only escalated an already existing arms race

Eisenhower's inauguration led to a whole new approach to foreign affairs and a new attitude towards communism.

Photo from the "Mau Mau" rebellion in Kenya, before Britain lost control and it's empire fell. This picture was chosen because the starvation and torture used on the people of Kenya was brutal and still was not enough to keep control of the nation.

The building of the Berlin wall was a pivotal moment in history and not even 2 weeks after it's construction the Soviet Union resumed nuclear testing.

Vietnam

Vietnam devastated the US as a nation and many americans did not support this war.

A village in Algeria after french bombs landed. This photo was chosen because this war was obviously a last resort from France to remain an empire and defend it's power.

  • The Vietnam war began as a struggle against France imperial rule.
  • After the war America had "decisive" support for Israel while Egypt, Syria, Iraq Sudan and Libya stood with the Soviet Union.

By 1968 more than 500,000 american troops soldiers were fighting in Vietnam. Roughly 58,000 died as well as over 1 million Vietnamese.

Objectives:

Cuban Missile Crisis

  • The Cuban Missile Crisis instilled fear in both the United States and the Soviet Union.
  • After the Soviets agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba the US agreed to withdraw missiles from Turkey and agreed not to invade Cuba.

Both leaders at the time are pictured here. Together they created the Nuclear Test Ban treaty which prohibited the testing of nuclear weapons above ground.

The Cold War changed nations, countries and lives all over the world. Wars within the cold war helped territories rise to independence leaving almost all of European imperialism behind as well as nuclear war narrowly being dodged.
