There are three different types of feminism. Liberal, socialist, and radical.

Liberal Feminism - Liberal feminism focuses on the idea that society holds the flase belief that women are less intelectually and physically able than men, and "female subordination is rooted in a set of customary and legal restraints that blocks a women's access to the so called public-world". They work hard to emphasize gender equality through legal and political means. Some achievements of this group would be getting allowance for women to join the army, or raising women's pay to equal a man's.

Socialist Feminism - Social feminists believe that womens oppression is rooted in both cultural and economic reasons. They believe that women are subjects to men's ruling in society because of their economic dependence on them. Housework and child care are two ideas that is generally believed to be a women's job, socialists professionalized it by hiring nannies and housekeepers to take some of the responsibility off of the woman of the household.

Radical Feminism - Radical feminists believe that the root cause of women's oppression is in the patriarchal gender relations that society is accustomed to, not legal reasons as liberal feminists do, or class conflict, as socialist feminists do. In 1968, a group of radical feminists protested against the Miss America pageant by throwing high heels and other feminine accoutrements into a garbage bin to represent freedom.

Conflict Theory

Theories

  • Exists between groups because of inequalities in power
  • Assumes that groups compete with one another to meet their needs
  • If groups are in competition, then needs of all will not be met
  • Competition can also result in expoitation by individuals in the group with greater power
  • Unlike other therios it is used to criticize, not explian society
  • According to conflict theory, society is organized into groups to divide people according to their power and to encourage competition
  • Many people believe that inequality is the natural state of human society
  • Karl Marx argued that inequalities could and should be eliminated

  • Men wielded economic power because men worked outside of the home and got paid where women worked inside the home and didn't get paid
  • Believed that women had no alternative but to marry, reproduce, and provide unpaid labor necessary to maintain the family
  • Men could only maintain there power though if they kept making money, and women could not have economic support without maintaining marriage

The Feminist Theory

The feminist theory argues that change is needed to make sure that everyone's needs is met. It attempts to explain the social inequalities between genders from the female perspective.
