Quotes

“Drink the milk.” (Mull 67)

“What do you suppose makes people so eager to break the rules? Is it simply the pleasure of disobedience? The thrill of rebellion? “ (Mull 59)

“The curse of mortality. You spend the first portion of your life learning, growing stronger, more capable. And then, through no fault of your own, your body starts to fail.” (Mull 146)

My Connection:

Text to Self

The main connection I have to Fablehaven is through Kendra. In the beginning of the book, she is very apprehensive and hesitant about doing anything unusual or daring, but near the end, she has to overcome that fear to save her family. Sometimes, I'll feel that way about trying something new or doing something I'm not used to, but I'll eventually give in after the initial doubt. The song "Firework" by Katy Perry demonstrates this connection.

Theme

The main theme of Fablehaven is that every decision we make, good or bad, intentional or unintentional, has consequences. Throughout the book, the characters are faced with choices that affect how the treaty of Fablehaven protects them. Kendra never causes any mischief, so she has every protection the treaty offers, while Seth has made some choices that limits the protections he is afforded.

Summary

My Opinion

Main Characters

When their parents are summoned to attend a cruise for two weeks after the death of their maternal grandparents, Kendra and Seth Sorenson are sent to spend time with their Grandma and Grandpa Sorenson. When they arrive, they discover a hidden world on their grandfather's land, a magical preserve known as Fablehaven, and embark on the journey of their lives to save their family and friends.

Kendra Sorenson- Kendra is shy and reserved. She usually has no problem following the rules, makes good grades, and tends to be a book worm.

Seth Sorenson- Seth is the perfect character foil for Kendra; he's very outgoing and courageous, not as concerned about school, and will do anything for a dare. He completely disregards the rules if he feels he is responsible and careful enough to avoid the dangers.

Personally, I think Fablehaven is a wonderful book. It has you on the edge of your seat, couch, or where ever you choose to read it. Not only is the story line amazing, the descriptions and vivid language are so life-like,it seems as if you're standing right with the characters. Overall, Fablehaven is an exceptional read and I would recommend this book to anyone with even a remote interest in fantasy.
