Electromagnetic (cont'd)

Gamma Rays

Visible Light

Visible light is the wavelengths visible to the human eye. Each color in a rainbow corresponds to a different wavelength of electromagnetic spectrum.

Ultraviolet

UV light has shorter wavelengths than visible light. Though these waves are invisible to the human eye, some bug can see it.

Gamma Rays

Gamma rays are the most energetic form of electromagnetic radiation, with a very short wavelength of less than one-tenth of a nanometer. They are produced by the hottest and most energetic objects in the universe, such as neutron stars and pulsars, supernova explosions, and regions around black holes.

X-Rays

X-rays are very high frequency waves, and carry a lot of energy. They will pass through most substances, and this is why they're used in medicine and industry to see inside things.

Waves

A rhymithic disturbance that carries energy without matter.

Mechanical Waves

Mechanical Waves

Transverse Waves

These waves need a medium which is a substance that a wave needs to travel such as solids, liquids and gases.

Electromagnetic Waves

A wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction perpendicular to the direction that the wave moves. A ripple on a pond and a wave on a string are examples of transverse waves.

Radio Waves

Electromanetic Waves

Radio waves are the lowest frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum, and are used mainly for communications.

Microwaves

Compressional Waves

These waves DO NOT need a medium to travel. They can travel in empty space as well solids, liquids and gases.

An electromagnetic wave shorter than that of a normal radio wave. Microwaves are used in radar, in communications, and for heating in microwave ovens and in other industrial processes.

A longitudinal wave transmitted by the elasticed compression of the medium. A wave in a "slinky" is a good visualization. Sound waves are longitudinal waves

Infrared Waves

Infrared waves have wavelengths longer than visible and shorter than microwaves, and have frequencies which are lower than visible and higher than microwaves.
