1984- The Proles

Class Systems

In his diary Winston writes, “If there is any hope, it lies with the Proles.”

Alienation

INNER PARTY

  • rulers
  • upper class

OUTER PARTY

  • state administrative jobs
  • educated members of society
  • encouraged to spy on and turn in enemies of BB

PROLES

  • The lower class of workers
  • the most free of any of the classes
  • uneducated
  • intelligence = vaporization

Alienation is a reoccurring theme in 1984 and is used by the inner party to keep people from feeling love and friendship. It is especially evident in the proles who are kept away from the other party's and to keep them separated they are not allowed to be educated like the other people in their society

Love

“So long as they (the Proles) continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. Left to themselves..."

  • "They didnt oughter of showed it not in front of the kids they didnt it aint right not in front of the kids" Pg 9
  • Proles can have a family, get married, have children
  • Live closely with other proles

Conclusion

  • Although it appears that the proles seem less human to the Party members, it is Winston's perspective that they are the ones who have been dehumanized the least.

Individual Identity

  • The party seems to have total control over their lives, but in reality the proles are the group that has maintained the most freedom because they have kept some of their own thoughts and desires

"Only the proles use scent" p.64

Scent and Painting of their faces

The proles expressed their individuality by singing.

"She had a young face, painted very thick...Party women never painted their faces"

Power

Introduction

Power of the Party over Proles:

-songs

-lottery

-beer

-pornography

The Party sees the proles as weak and incapable of revolt

Winston sees power in the proles:

"if there is any hope it lies in the proles"

pg.75

Privacy

Although the Proles relate to many different themes in 1984, they are most important in demonstrating the concepts of dehumanization and power.

The minor themes they relate to all build on these two major ideas.

  • "The great majority of proles did not even have telescreens in their homes."Pg 75

The minor themes are:

  • Manipulation
  • Privacy
  • Individual Identity
  • Class Systems
  • Alienation
  • Love

  • Separate community from the Party members but not much privacy amongst themselves

Dehumanization

Most Party Members Equate Proles with Animals:

  • " The Proles and Animals are free" (75).
  • " Proles are helpless like the animals. Humanity is the party. The others are outside- irrelevant" (282).

"The proles are human beings... We are not human."

Winston's perspective is that The Proles are the ones who have been dehumanized the least:

"They were not loyal to a party or country or idea, they were loyal to one another... They had not become hardened inside. They had held onto the primitive emotions which he himself had to learn by conscious effort. " (172).

Psychological Manipulation

The Party finds ways to distract the proles and ensure that they are unaware of the evils of INGSOC.

  • primitive patriotism appealed to
  • given many distractions
  • overworked, uneducated, and underfed
