Lyric Analysis

"Movers, shakers and producers

Me and my friends understand the future

I see the strings that control the system

I can do anything with no resistance"

Rebellion

Overview

This verse can represent the first function of deviance: Clarifying Norms. In the song, the man identifies that he understands who and what controls the system, and by following those rules he can clarify what he is and isn't supposed to do in order to make it to the top.

Rebellion is represented by this group of poor people starting a riot in order to promote their cause. The rebellion is another example of how disorganized the society is and furthers their case with their discontent of how society is ran.

The song "Handlebars" came out in 2005 on Flobots' album Fight with Tools. The initial meaning behind the song was to express how we have an abundance of potential to create or destroy things as we please; the lead singer said himself that we'd have these bursts of innovation, but we'd only use it for harm rather than put it to good use.

Innovation

Promoting Social Change

The riot that this group of people started is a great example of their deviance promoting social change. Their ultimate goal for the riot is to change how society is operating and use its power for better purposes.

Handlebars-Flobots

Innovation is well represented in the song because their entire goal is to change society, but the means in which they achieve this goal are not accepted by society since they have found their own way to achieve this change they wish to see in society.

Diffusing Tension

At a point in the video, we see a man spray painting a poster on the side of a building. You can clearly see that he's expressing his discontent for the situation based on his actions and the clothes he's wearing. A few moments later, we see him join the protest to further express his dissatisfaction.

Unifying the Group

During the interlude of the song, it can be seen that an uprising is beginning to form against those in power- another relatable term would be the Proletariat and the Bourgeoisie. It drew the line of 'Them vs. Us', and showed one groups discontent for the other
