If the colonists wanted to survive, they needed to have an area that would provide space for growing crops and supply natural food, build houses, and protect them from harsh weather. For example, in New York, Mount Marcy provided the colonists with a good vantage point for scouting animals, or indians. In Pennsylvania, Lake Erie provides fish, oysters, and other river water animals. Delaware has the Delaware River for fishing, but also large forests which are good for hunting and an amazing source of wood. Last but not least, New Jersey is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and has an impressive shipping port.

The Middle Colonies produced LOTS of food. They were called the "Breadbasket" colonies because of their abundance of grains and fish. They also had plenty of water, fertile soil, and large forests. Colonists would build ships and tools for trade, as New Jersey was right next to the ocean and it was a major shipping port. In fact, Philadelphia was one of the busiest ports.
