Three Sociological Images

The Sociological Perspective

In 1963 Peter Berger coined the term the Sociological Perspective and described it as the ability to see the general in the particular. The ability to identify general patterns of behavior in particular people.

The view that our social backgrounds influence our attitudes, behavior and life chances.

Our life chances and attitudes are influenced by our environment.

  • People in white color jobs are more likely to be involved in health maintenance behaviors than people in blue collar jobs.

e.g. The child of a University professor is more likely to attend a private liberal arts college than the child of a domestic worker. (finances, social standing, higher emphasis on edcuation etc.)

C. Wright Mills created the concept of the Sociological Imagination

Gives us insight as to how or why a person arrives at a certain station in life.

The sociological Imagination is the ability to see the connection between our personal experience and the larger forces of history

Allows us to see where personal troubles and societal problems intersect.

Each of these photos depicted sociological situations

This is the intersection of personal biography and history.

Thinking about multiple causes for complex problems in society

Was your first impression right?

The sociological Imagination can help us to understand others, why they believe what they believe, why they do what they do, their socioeconomic status and their political or religious beliefs. We try to understand, rather than judge, and to think through the multiple variables affecting complex phenomena

Were you able to step back and look at the situation from 10,000 feet?

Gun show in United States with no background checks :

The influence of nationalism and fear of terrorism

Some poeple believe Obama might take our guns away - we need to buy more now!

The Sociological Imagination : Understanding the intersection of biography and history and how it affects society - and how personal issues become societal problems

Leads to more firearm accidents and allows them to fall into the wrong hands

Notice any age or race in particular?

Shawn Nyman

Overweight people in line at fast food restaurant:

Once we are able to see the general in the particular, the sociological perspective, we then can look at the reasons for why a group behaves a certain way in society. When we look at the social causation of 'why and what for' of societal behavior, we use the tool the sociological imagination.

"Society is the sum total of human interactions."

Did not have resources growing up to get a solid education, pressed for time working two low wage jobs
