River Valley Civilization: Hwang He

The Yellow River Civilization had an organized state that carefully regulated irrigation. This civilization was ruled by a line of kings called the Shang Dynasty. A large part of rule was local, consisting of a network of walled towns whose leaders were loyal to the king. These local leaders comprised the bureaucracy.

Cities

China was geographically isolated and the center of civilization was the Hwang He. The Shang did however rule in the capital city of Anyang. Huandi City was also another city created in the River Valley.

Religion

The Chinese of the Hwuang He civilization praised godlike kings of early civilization starting with P'an Ku. They recorded part-fact, part-fiction history of their early kings and believed in the way of the Dao (balance).

Art

The Chinese were skilled in the ways of pottery. They had also began in implement bronze well and sculpted delicate designs and was used for decorating horses.

Writing

The writing progressed slowly from knotted ropes to scratches of lines on bone. On the bones they would make ideographic symbols which they created. Examples are Oracle Bone and early writings of the Book of Songs.

Social Structure

In the Huang He river valley, emperors were at the top of the social hierarchy. The Si Kong were the seconded highest and the Slaves were at the bottom of the social classes. Men and women were not equal as women were seen as inferior.
