Austria-Hungary joining the Triple Alliance was mostly due to the fact that it shared many ethnic ideals with Germany such as speaking German, shared borders, and had the same imperialistic desires. Austria-Hungary used the alliance as a way to gain and steal land from Italy to expand its power so it could overthrow the stronger oppositions.
To stop any threats from other nations and to give eachother support and military when embarking in a war. They were trying to gain as much land as possible while stopping any threats from intruding and stopping them.
