What is Birth control?

Definition

The literal meaning of birth control is: the practice of preventing unwanted pregnancies, especially by use of contraception.

Contraception: The deliberate use of artificial methods or other techniques to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse.

What are the types of birth control?

  • Natural Methods
  • Chemical Methods
  • Mechanical methods
  • Surgical methods
  • Increasing fertility

Chemical Methods

IUD (intra-uterine device)

A device placed inside the uterus (by doctors). This device prevents impregnation and a similar device called an IUS slowly releases hormones which do the same

Contraceptive methods

These are pills or injections that use sex hormones in order to prevent pregnancy by stopping the production of eggs in a woman's ovary. It contains progestrone and oestrogen.

Spermicides

These are chemicals that are used to kill sperm when entered into the vagina
