SNMP's Role in the OSI Model

Task: Understand what SNMP does within the OSI model

Conditions: Small classroom, comfortable temperature

Standards: For everyone to understand what SNMP does in the OSI model

first lets understand what the OSI Model is

Constructed of 7 layers

The Application layer

  • it is the highest layer of the OSI model
  • the location where applications work with the network
  • provides the necessary services that support applications
  • it provides the interface between the network protocol and the software running on the computer such as the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

Used to communicate with network elements as in routers, swithches, servers, and druckers (printers)

Defines the format of packets between a manager and an agent

Defines 8 different types of packets

GetRequest – sent from manager (client) to agent (server)

GetNextRequest – mostly used to retrieve values of the entries in a table

GetBulkRequest – to retrieve a large amount of data

SetRequest – sent from manager to agent to set(store) a value

Response – in response to GetRequest or GetNextRequest

Trap – reports an event. For example, if the agent is rebooted, it informs

the manager and reports the time of rebooting.

InformRequest – sent from one manager to another remote manager to get the values of some variables under the control of the remote manager

Report – to report some types of errors between managers.
