Perspective Point/ Vanishing Point

This is where you use perspective to make a focus on a particular element of your poster where you place the important element in one of three places:

1 - in front of the vanishing point

2 - use the element to create the perspective

3 - opposite the vanishing point.

In the example shown the important element (the main character) is placed in front of the vanishing point, putting her in focus.

Horizon Line

This is normally used in a grind layout and in itself is not a particular composition. It is however used to make an asymmetrical design in an otherwise symmetrical one.

In the example shown, the horizon line is just under the horizontal grid line.

Grid

Circular

This is where you seperate the poster into equal sized rectangles which mark where you want to put the elements of your poster. You can either put the elements in the blocks or on the tangent lines to make a symmetrical look to the poster.

An example of this is shown to the right, both of the character are either side of the line as well as facing it. Also the text is symmetrically aligned on the vertical tangent line. This makes the poster look neat and asthetically pleasing.

This is where the poster takes your eyes around the image either using circular images or containing the elements of the poster inside a circle (or oval due to the poster shape.)

The example on the right uses the latter method by containing the characters into an oval shape which is outlined in the background.

Rule of Thirds

"Z"

This is where you split your poster into 9 identical rectangles using two vertical and two horizontal lines. The four points formed at the intersection of the lines can be used to focus the main points of your poster or you can put impages in the boxes created by the lines.

An example of this is shown where the characters have been put into the spaces as well as the tagline at the top being split into the sections also. This draws in focus to most of the characters.

This is where the elements on the poster draw the eyes of the audience from the left to the right and then down the page before once again going from left to right.

The example shows this as there is a tagline at the top of the poster and the title at the bottom so the audience would read the tagline before looking at the picture and finally the title.
