A presentation by Emily and Kristen

The Gunpowder Plot

What Were the People Concerned About?

How Did the People Live?

In 1603 Queen Elizabeth died. The throne was offered to James VI of Scotland (who then became James I of Britain).

Queen Elizabeth gave permission in building professional theatres all over England.

The Globe Theatre was built shortly after in 1599.

In 1625, after the death of his father James I, Charles I became king.

He was unpopular and in between 1625-1629, he dissolved parliament three times so he could rule alone.

The Gunpowder Plot was an attempt to assassinate James and his parliament in 1605. The conspirators were brutally executed as a warning to others.

This event inspired Shakespeare to write Macbeth in 1606.

The people of England were concerned about their health due to many diseases present during that time.

People had short life spans (lived to only around 40 years) due to lack of medicine and overall knowledge with their health.

In 1558, Elizabeth I became the Queen of England.

She helped develop England into becoming the Western world's leading commercial and cultural center; where literature and education flourished.

7 years after Macbeth was written, The Globe burned down during a performance of Shakespeare’s play Henry VIII.

There was a violent clash throughout Europe consisting of the Protestant and Catholic leaders and the people who followed them.

Queen Elizabeth kept the Catholics from attempting rebellion, proving Elizabeth to be a powerful leader.

On April 23 1616, Shakespeare died at the age of 52 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was buried at the Holy Trinity Church.

It was in 1623 that the first edition of Shakespeare's work was published.

The people of England lived in marketplaces and venues.

They did not bathe very often (only once a year) and when they did, it was the men who went first, then the women, and finally the children.

When they would cook, it was using kennel over a big fire.

Thank you for listening! :)

Catholics had hoped James would support them and when they realized he didn't they planned the Gunpowder Plot.
