Upper Class

Upper class party in England

The Upper Class is often also referred to as the Gentry. It mainly consists of people who grew up in families were they owned land and were ensured their spot in social class because of the land they inherit.

The middle class consisted of military officers, lawyers, lower clergy men, and civil servants. Lawyers and doctors did not have the social standing they do today because of their stereotypical personalities.

The lower class consisted of people such as woodworkers or shoe makers. These people were considered extremely low on the social chain. Even lower than them, however, would be people who didn't even work.

Yeoman

There is a class between upper and middle that existed but it is just for those who owns their own land and work off of it. These are kind of like farmers.

Random Fact

Black Rights

In the late 1700s it was actually very common for the middle class to have up to 5 or 6 children. In the book the Bennett family is a pretty typical size for the time. However, the death rate was pretty high and chances of most families living at such large numbers for a long time lowers.

There were not a lot of Black slaves in Britain at the time. A few people had slaves and it made the labor go up and the cost go down dramatically. The difference is that everyone knew it was wrong. Eventually segregation ended in 1833.
