hand out chalk or markers

People write as they feel moved

(15-20 min) Write a question on the board

(15-20 min) You can group students and have them talk with each other about the issues/topics presented or you could have a whole class discussion or you could do both (initial discussion should be about 15-20 minutes).

VERY BRIEFLY explain that this is a silent activity - NO TALKING!!!

If you want to respond, do it on the chalk talk board.

Likely to be long silences--NORMAL, so allow plenty of wait time before deciding it is over.

Examples

*Could be your driving question for the day

*What did we learn today or yesterday

*what topic will your team be working

on...who will do what...

Facilitator can influence the outcome

A student can comment or respond to other's ideas by circling the comment and drawing a line connecting to their comment.

* could write a question about a comment

* write a comment or idea just as a student would do

A change of pace and encourages thoughtful contemplation

* Give students who struggle the question or topic early.

* Use post-its like talking chips.

* Use post-its for more anonymity, names can go on the back to help you monitor understanding or create groups based on interest.

* Have different levels of questions for different groups of students.
