School Uniforms infringe upon students rights to express themselves as an individual. They also have no effect on behavior and academic achievement.
A 2007 study found that school uniforms increased the average number of assaults by about 14 incidents [per year] in the most violent schools in America.
School uniforms restrict students' freedom of expression
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees that all individuals have the right to express themselves freely. By giving students clothing that doesn't reflect themselves, it is taking away this right that is guaranteed to them.
Many government and school officials around the country are for school uniforms. They think that school uniforms keep students focused on their education, thus no focus on clothes. Most schools with school uniforms have a wide population of children with socioeconomic disparities, thus this solution is said to help the problem of clothes and hide the disparities taking place.
Clothing choices are a crucial part of self expression that help students, like us, find ourselves and our personality. Taking that away just doesn't seem right.
However, this is not the case. Having uniforms often draws attention to these socioeconomic disparities, making the situation worse. Also these kids often pay more attention to their clothes than their studies because they feel uncomfortable in these clothes, unlike what they thought.
