Billy Elliot is a closed narrative as there is an overall conclusion to the film, there is a definative ending. The moral of the stroy line is that we make our own choices, and should always follow our dreams, no matter what other people think. Another moral of the story is that to be successful you have to work hard.
It has a typical Hollywood structure (named as such because of Hollywood having the biggest name sake in the film industry as there is a definative beginning, middle and end to the narrative.
The main themes need to be portrayed in the production are...
Coming of age and self discovery
Billy notices he is different from other boys his age and has different interests.
Fullfilling your dreams
Billy works hard to eventually get into the royal ballet school.
The Father and son relationship
Two generations clash due to there conflicting views on life
Gender and class issue
we see sexism and gener roles 'women stay home with childeren and men go out to work. and the classes live in total sperated areas.
Michael is Billy's best friend
He like others belived that Billy was homosexual because he likes ballet, Michael even tried to kiss Billy.
They were both unacceptable for the community at that time with there desires.
In one of the scenes we see Michael trying on his mothers and dressing Billy in his mums clothes.
The main theme of the film is the mining strikes.
Billys father and brother both go on strike and so does the majority of the community in which Billy lives.
They were all angry with Margret Thatcher who was the priminister at the time. As she wanted to shut down the coal mines which means they would lose their jobs.
Another theme is that Billy loses his mum and how him and his family deal with this.
They also show the seperation of the classes; lower, middle and upper class all live in seperation. We see this seperation when Mrs Wilkinson (who is middle class) goes to visit Billy and get stared at by a young girl who is surprised to see the kind of clothes she is wearing.
Billy is an 11 year old boy from London.
Billy is from a Lower class family as his father and brother are miners, and are part of the mining strikes.
He tries to conform to his fathers ideals by taking part in the boxing classes he pays for, as well as shaping himself to societies expectations of a young lower class boy. Although he gains a passion for dance after joining in with a ballet class.
Billy lost his mum when he was young.
Alike the set design the wallpaper is old and appears worn, to show that times were hard and that they could afford new or nice things and they had to settle for less. This shows how exact the set design is in the musical.
Billy's father is the most complex character, he has many different sides to him. You see his character grow throughout the story, developing emotionally and having his ideals change.
Billy's father and brother are both miners and are taking part in the miners strike.
Billy's father does not show any affection towards either of his sons nor does he demonstrate any emotion concerning his dead wife. Until half way into the film. where we see him change.
Billys brother has simular traits as his father.
They both display alot of anger.
Billy and his brother share a room and have very little due to
little money.
Billy's dance teacher.
She believes in Billy, and helps him discover his talent.
She is a mother figure for Billy.
She represents the British middle class of the 1980's.
She is 40 years old and lives with her husband and daughter Debbie.
She lost her passion for dance and shows that she is fed up and doesn't enjoy her job and she had to give up her dreams. and expected herself to be doing bigger and better things with her life.
The most obvious peice of scenery is the staircase to Billys room. This is an easily trasportable iten of the set and rrally makes you picture the house. It sows the simplistic way of living.
The main set used throughout the show was comprised of a three walled room set that became the Elliot’s house, the workers union and any other building it needed to be and although the actual walls didn’t change, you never questioned that the room was the same as the actors and added elements made it clear where they were. Parts of this set could also be pulled out to make it a different room such as a dressing table or toilet stalls, changing it again into a completely different setting without much effort.
if i were to direct this show i would keep most of the scenery the same or very simular, as the decor in the house compared to the decore on the set is so simualar and i would want to keep the decor as shabby and worn as this represents there class and money situation and era without even knowing the story line. i would also keep the stairs into billy's room the same as i think this really shows the seperation of the set, so you know which room they are are in without changing the set completly. it also shows the simplicity of the house.
i would keep the cosumes simular to the film as this shows the difference between the classes and also shows the era.
I would probobly change The scene where the police stand with the sheilds in a line and sing a song, as this is quite a boring scene and so i would add a dance or at least some basic movements just to liven up the scene.
a dance i would definatly keep the same is the one in which Michael and Billy dance together with the clothes in the back ground as i think this is a really entertaining routine and adds somthing fun to the serious topics in the storyline.
the wall paper in the rooms on set were old and dirty and appear to be worn which emphesised the tough times.
