  • In this case the Drunkard is a representation of a person like us that has been brainwashed by what society thinks is right.
  • The empty bottles he hides behind him is past judgment. He hides because he is afraid of the truth and what others have to say.
  • The alcohol that is being consumed is society, causing him to forget why he is ashamed and causes him to act upon society's standards.

How is society shown through this character?

In the lowest points of people's lives they chose to turn to substances that will help them forget what they want do not want to remember. It goes to show the ugly side of the world/society, and how it really affects people.

What does he represent?

The Drunkard represents a loss of innocence and depression. When the author describes the little prince's visit to the planet he says "This visit was a very brief one, but it plunged the little prince into a deep depression." (34) This depiction is well said because it represents a person who is no longer content with their life. The bottles that surround him represent the mistakes that he has made. He is trying to drown his sorrows with alcohol.

DISCUSSION QUESTION

The drunkard teaches us that there is an unfortunate dark side to the world. He is an example of how people use other things like drugs and alcohol to cope with their problems.

In reaction to the Drunkard The little prince says "Grown-ups are certainly very, very strange"(36). He is unable to comprehend what is really going on and it proves the innocence in a child; not being able to relate to the substance abuse.

What is your opinion on how the drunkard chooses to cope with his problems?

Who is the Drunkard?

The first time that we meet the Drunkard is when the Little Prince visits his planet. While having a conversation the author adds in "Whom he found sunk in silence before a collection of empty bottles and a collection of full ones" (34).

This already tells us that the man he is about to come in contact with does not want to come in contact with him. The Drunkard is just a man that does not have the will power to do better with his life.
