Long Parliament

Was called Long Parliament because it sat for 13 years. Charles I called them for money. The Parliament instead demanded that he removed Strafford and Laud and punished them.

1642

Royalists won at Adwalton moor, and gained control of most of Yorkshire. The Parliamentaries captured the Cathedral city of Lichfield.

Battle of Hopton Heath

Charles was given to the English Parliament by the Scotts and was imprisoned & later executed. Thus marking the end of the first English Civil War.

Was an inconclusive battle and killed Royalist commander Earl of Northamton

Parliament was determined to fight the war to the end. Passed the Self-Denying Ordinance. The New Model Army went into two battles with sir Tomas Fairfax as commander and Cromwell as second-in-command. Those where the Battles of Naseby & Langport

English Civil War

Charles attempted to recover a stable base to strengthen the Midlands. The cities of Oxford and Newark where fortresses which showed Charles support. He captured Liecester which lay between the two cities. He had little resources so he took for shelter with a prespatarian Scottish army.

Was the king of England & Scotland. King Charles lived an extravagant life & loved art. He would always go to Parliament to support his rich lifestyle. However he believed in divine rights and refused to compromise with parliament. He was executed on January 30, 1649.

James was smart but he made many mistakes. From that came the nickname "The wisest fool in Christendom". Had a heavy Scottish accent. He was a very messy unkept man. Wrote his own version of the bible, which was considered a great work of English literature. Selected the Duke of Buckingham as an advisor. Died of stomach problems in 1625.

The Scots had helped Parliament win at Marston Moor, Thus gaining control of York and North England. Cromwell was defeated in the Battle of Lostwithiel in Cornwall.

Son of Charles I. Cononated April of 1661. Was married to Catherine of Braganza.

Son of Charles I. Crowned April 1685. Married to Anne Hyde then to Mary of Modena

Civil War

The civil war started when Charles I, 1642. At this time he had declared war on Parliament at Nottingham. Most people where neutral on this fight, however most English cities and the Royal Navy favoured the Parliament. The king had more supporters in the rural communities.

Oliver Cromwell

1599 - 1658

Was an independent Puritan. Was elected as a member of Parliament. He was on the Parliamentarian side of the civil war. Was one of the Principal commanders of the New Model Army. He killed king Charles in 1649.
