Group Discussion Questions

Historical Background

Question #1: In book I of the Iliad, there is a fight between Achilles and Agamemnon. Analyze this fight. What is at stake (both literally and figuratively) for these two men? What does this tell us about Ancient Greek Culture?

Question #2: In book VI of the Iliad, we get our first glance at the city of Troy and its inhabitants. Compare and contrast this city and its inhabitants with what we have seen of the Greeks’ camp. Why might these differences be significant to the story’s theme?

Question #3: In Book IX of the Iliad, we get a glimpse into the characteristics and values honored by the Greeks. What are these characteristics and values? How are they similar and different from contemporary values in the United States?

Mycenaean or Bronze Age Greeks, who flourished from about 1600-1100 BC.

Before the Mycenaeans arrived in the region, earlier "Greek" cultures worshiped ancient fertility goddesses probably related to Ishtar, Aphrodite, even Athena and Hera, and appear to have lived a rather peaceable, agricultural lifestyle

These Ancient (and even Classical) Greeks are best viewed as a culture rather than as a unified people or "nation". When we speak of "the Ancient Greeks" it's the same way we view “Western Culture” as referring to Europe, Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia.
