Adaptive Structuration Theory

Scott Poole

Gerry DeSanctis

1994

Background

Phase

Model

Orientation- efforts are unfocused because

group goals are unclear

Conflict- factions disagree on how to approach the

problem and argue against other viewpoints

Coalescence- members allow others to "save face" by adopting solutions acceptable to all

Development- the group concentrates on ways

to implement a single solution

Integration- members reward

each other for cohesive efforts

Scott Poole, however, was not convinced by this phase model after some testing... With some help he found that these phases could be adapted and applied to the microlevel of small-group activity.

Structuration

Theory

Anthony Giddens

1984

is formulated as “the production and reproduction

of the social systems through members’ use of rules

and resources in interaction”.

Basic Assumptions

=concerning the nature of everyday human social interactions and agency on a small scale.

= concerns the social structure and broader systems.

  • Social life is not the sum of all micro-level activity (e.g. dyads), but social activity cannot be completely explained from a macro perspective.
  • The repetition of the acts of individual agents reproduce the structure.
  • Social structures are neither inviolable nor permanent.
  • The social structures constrain the actions of individual agents.
  • Thus structure and action constrain each other in an evolving way.

AST!!

This theory has been adapted and changed by researchers interested in the relationship between technology and social structures , such as information technology in organizations. DeSanctis and Poole borrow from Giddens in order to propose an "adaptive structuration theory" with respect to the bringing forth and use of group decision support systems. In particular, they use Giddens' notion of "modalities of structuration".

- how social structures are appropriated into concrete situations, to consider how technology is used with respect to its "user".

2 Main Points to Understand:

1) The types of structures that are provided by the

advanced technologies

2) The structures that actually emerge in human action as people interact with these technologies.

An Application?

The AST could be used to analyze the advent of various innovations such as the printed press, electricity, telegraph, mass transpirations, radio, telephone, TV, the Internet, etc., and show how the structures of these innovations penetrated the respective societies, influencing them, and how the social structures of those societies in turn influenced and modified innovations' original intent. In conclusion AST's appropriation process might be a good model to analyze the utilization and penetration of new media technologies in our society.
