What was the purpose of the Royal Comission?
“inquire into and report upon the status of women in Canada, and to recommend what steps might be taken by the Federal Government to ensure for women equal opportunities with men in all aspects of Canadian society.”
Royal Commission was first called for by the current Prime Minister at the time, Lester B. Pearson on Feb 1967
Lester B. Pearson
This was the first Royal Commission to be ever led by a woman
In 1960's, a lot of civil rights and peace movements were created, one of which was the women rights
During the post-war...
many women were required to take on the role that the men would usually do, WORK.
building weapons/equpiment for war..
they then started to gain alot more knowledge and experience and pay!
But then...
The soilders came back from war...
and they needed their jobs back
but women didn't want to risk it because many were so use to and loved the feeling of control. They enjoyed being paid, even though there wages were lower then the wages men got, even for the same amount of labour and work
this is only one of many reasons why the Royal Commission came to be
Many were forced to return to their responsiblities at home as a house wife
They either worked got paid less than a man did or stayed at home and worked, as a mother unpaid, either way women lost out
This is when many women believed in their equality rights and decided to TAKE A STAND!
This is when the Royal Commission came handy....
gave women the chance to speak under the behalf of others and the lack of inequality there was between the two genders
Women all across Canada joined together to discuss this social issue
Created a lot of awareness
The commission discovered that ...
8/10 provinces did have the law to have equal pay for both genders but women were still being paid less than men
2/3 of people on welfare were women
only 3.9% of women working had a management position
The recommendations that they eventually came up with were:
Equal value and treatment
maternity leave
day care
Indian Act
birth control
education systems need to supply students with more textbooks that had graphics of women doing occupations that men would do too - stop being bias
pensions
access of women to mangement positions
By the 1980's most of the 167 recommendations that were made were successfully fully or partially adapted to Canadian society and government
1971- A federal cabinet position specifcally on the Status of Women was made
1972- Office of Equal Opportunity in the Public Serive Commission was created
1973-Advisory Council on the Status of Women is created
mid-1970s- any offencing, descriminatory in Labour Code, Public Service Pensions Act, Criminal Code, and Citizenship Act
