The main issue in the story is that Kara needs to protect the reefs of her town otherwise it will all be gone in an instant. She needs to defeat Dougie Evans, who is very powerful, cruel, and thoughtless. This kind of thing really can happen to anyone, but Kara is fighting a nearly impossible battle. She has no power and almost nobody to help her in the beginning. Her only ability to get people on her side was her missing mother and a baby dolphin.
The theme is that there are bad people that can change with the push, and there are good people who don't need a push, but there is never a bad person who can't become good. Dougie said "'The truth was staring at me in the face all the time', he says. 'I chose not to see it.'" (p.330) This shows that even thought Dougie was a really bad guy, he still changed.
"I watch Dougie Evans wrestle with his thoughts. He twists his hands around and around the stems of the bouquet of flowers. His face is pulled into a tight knot. Pieces of flower stem fall to the floor, but Dougie doesn't seem to notice."(p.330)
This quote means that Dougie will now think hard about his life and actions. Being that he brought flowers for Kara and her family, this means that he may also want to change for the better.
The setting of "White Dolphin" is basically a fishing town that has no direct name. It runs on the fish it gets from the bay it is next to. The time is not specific in any way, except that it is in the slight past where there are laptops and modern filming. The time for the setting could not have been better being that at this time, Kara's life has reached a major climax. The importance of the setting is to tell you how important the sea is in other places. This is realistic because there are fishing towns and there are a lot of conflicts dealing with protecting nature today. Fishermen of the town are blowing up the reefs for fish.
Like any other book, there are several important characters besides a protagonist and antagonist. The main character is Kara, a young girl with dyslexia, a missing mother which follows most of the plot, a dad with financial issues. Her antagonists are Jake and Dougie Evans, a boy and his father. Jake bullies Kara forcing her to fight back and lose temper, and Dougie is a successful, cruel man who basically owns Kara's dad and uncle. He has absolutely no empathy or thought to other lives, and would do anything to get it his way.
