When we did the Present Perfect we were talking about something we "have" done in the past that is still true today. We also used it to talk about something we had done the very immediate past.
Ejemplos: He terminado mi tarea.
Has asistido a North por tres años.
I have finished my homework.
You (inf) have attended North for 3 years.
Siempre habíamos querido un perrito.
Yo había oído las noticias cuando me llamaste.
Ya habías leído dos cientas paginas cuando perdiste el libro.
Yo ya había comido a las ocho.
I had eaten by 8:00.
Me había lavado las manos antes de comer.
I had washed my hands before eating.
Nunca había comido una comida tan buena.
I had never eaten food this good.
Todavia no había terminado a las 7:30
Yo nunca había visto un monstruo.
Just like the Present Perfect,
the Pluperfect is a compound tense.
It will be using a form of
"Haber" + the present participle.
I still hadn't finished at 7:30.
" HAD"
This is used to talk about the remote past, actions that occurred PRIOR to a specific time.
When we use this tense there is always a stated or implied "cut off" point
Habíamos corrido cinco millas antes de que te vimos.
Yo había terminado la tarea cuando me enteré que el profesor había cancelado clase.
When we were working with the present perfect there was a cut off point also, it was NOW, which is why the present perfect represents an action that was done in the past that IS STILL TRUE today.
When using the past perfect the cut off point was sometime in the past.
I had completed the homework when
I found out the professor had canceled class.
Él no había podido dormir desde el accidente.
